MEET KASI 'THABO BESTER': THE SMOOTH OPERATOR WHO BROUGHT HELL TO HIS FAMILY
Meet Kasi "Thabo Bester," Sibusiso Mahlangu, and his wife Lerato Mahlangu. They didn't just try to scam the system, they allegedly played God.
In a chilling copycat crime that has left Mzansi shaken, this couple is accused of burning Lerato’s own baby daddy, Sibusiso Sitebe, just to fake a death and cash in on life insurance. The allegations are enough to make your blood boil.
The allegations are enough to make your blood run cold.
THE DECEPTION: HOW IT ALL STARTED!
It started with a routine traffic stop in Hammanskraal, Tshwane that turned into a horror movie.
Police pulled over a suspicious-looking vehicle and arrested the driver, Sibusiso Mahlangu, for possession of a stolen car. But when they ran his fingerprints, the system screamed "DECEASED".
According to official records, Mahlangu had died in a house fire over a year ago. His wife, Lerato, had even claimed a massive insurance payout.
Cops stared in disbelief, they had caught a "dead man walking," and his dark secret was about to unravel.
DEAD MAN CAUGHT DRIVING SPREAD LIKE WILDFIRE!
In 2023, news that Sibusiso was alive spread like wildfire through Soshanguve. Residents were furious: if he was alive, whose body did they bury?
The community’s shock turned into rage as the truth emerged: the couple allegedly murdered Lerato’s ex-boyfriend and baby daddy,, Sibusiso Sitebe, burning him beyond recognition to fake Mahlangu's death.
Facing a mob baying for blood outside the Soshanguve Magistrates Court, the terrified couple abandoned their bail application. They chose the safety of a police cell over the deadly fury of the streets they had betrayed.

MAHLANGU'S FAKE FUNERAL
Dead men usually stay buried, yet Sibusiso Mahlangu shocked the people of Soshanguve on 20 April 2022. Presumed dead, he appeared in court with his wife, Lerato, facing murder charges.
Mahlangu’s plan to fake his death crashed after an arrest for a stolen car. His reappearance exposes a grim reality: police alleged he murdered Sibusiso Sitebe to stage his own funeral.
The Sitebe family now faced the heartbreaking truth that their missing son was likely the one buried in Mahlangu’s grave. Eish, the truth has finally come to light.
Funeral preparations were made for Mahlangu while the Sitebe family searched for their son. A year later, they faced the grim news that their brother was likely buried.
FAMILY'S AGONY AS MISSING SON FOUND IN KILLER'S GRAVE
For over a year, the Sitebe family desperately searched for their missing son, Sibusiso.
While they searched for answers, Sibusiso Mahlangu was allegedly burying Sitebe’s body to fake his own death. Now, Mahlangu has appeared in court alive, leaving the Sitebes shattered.
"We will be able to talk about all this maybe after a week. We still need to digest everything," said a traumatised Seun Sitebe.
The family struggled to accept that their brother is likely the one in that coffin.

'WE USED ALL OUR SAVINGS TO BURY A STRANGER'
While the couple sat in jail, the Mahlangu family lived through a nightmare.
In August 2023, the family spent their life savings on a dignified funeral for Sibusiso, mourning him deeply. Now, they learned their tears were for a stranger.
"We used all our savings... it was all an act," a devastated Johannes Mahlangu told Daily Sun.
The body in the coffin was Sitebe's, and was used as a decoy. To make matters worse, the community accused the grieving parents of being part of the scam, breaking their hearts further.

HORROR REVEALED: SITEBE BURNT ALIVE FOR MONEY
The trial began, revealing details that sickened the court.
State Advocate Vusimuzi Tshabalala dropped a bombshell: the pathologist found that Sibusiso Sitebe didn’t die before the fire, he died in it.
The court heard the victim was still alive when set alight. The couple allegedly lured Sitebe to their home, torched the house while he was still breathing. They listened to his final agony as they burned him to ashes, all to claim R575 000. It wasn’t just fraud, it was pure torture.

CRACKS APPEAR: 'HE PIMPED ME OUT!'
As the walls closed in, the couple turned on each other.
Desperate to save herself, Lerato took the stand, painting her husband as a monster. She claimed Sibusiso was abusive, forced her into abortions, and shockingly "pimped her out" to other men.
"I secretly stopped preventing... Sibusiso forced me to abort," she cried.
But Sibusiso wasn't silent either. In a stunning last-minute confession, he admitted to everything: killing Sitebe, burning the body, and faking his death. The "partners in crime" were now enemies.

GUILTY AS SIN! JUSTICE FOR SITEBE
The lies, tears and finger-pointing failed to save them. The North Gauteng High Court saw through the act.
Judge Papi Mosopa found both Sibusiso and Lerato GUILTY of premeditated murder, conspiracy and fraud.
"No amount of sentence can bring back the life of the deceased," the Judge declared, handing down the ultimate punishment: LIFE IMPRISONMENT.
As the couple was led away in handcuffs to rot in jail, the Sitebe family hugged and sang outside. Justice was slow, but the "Kasi Thabo Bester" was finally caged.
SIBUSISO SITEBE'S FAMILY SPEAKS
For Sibusiso's family, the pain of justice is measured in burials, not court dates.
Aunt Tiny Khumalo revealed their deepest wound: the trauma of burying Sibusiso twice. First, his killers laid him to rest under a stolen name. Then, on 20 August 2023, his family had to bury him again.
"It was so heartbreaking because we had to attend his funeral when he was already buried," the family cried.
Neighbour, Charles Kabine, echoed the tragedy: "The poor man had to be buried the second time." Warnings to leave the "drama" husband were ignored, and now a family is left shattered by grief.
